Where to hunt depends on which quail. Bobwhite hunting centers on the South and the southern Plains, while the desert Southwest offers Gambel’s, scaled and Mearns’ quail.
Bobwhite country
Look for farm edges, brushy draws, native grass and weedy fields with nearby cover.
Desert quail
Gambel’s and scaled quail live in desert washes, mesquite and grassland. Coveys stay within reach of water.
Public land
Many state wildlife areas and national forests offer quail hunting. Scout before the season and talk to the local agency.
