Bobwhite quail numbers have dropped by about 80 percent in recent decades, and the main reason is habitat.
What the surveys show
Breeding Bird Survey data from 1966 to 1991 already showed bobwhite and scaled quail declining across their range, while some western quail held steady.
Habitat is the answer
Pheasants Forever launched Quail Forever in 2005 to restore the grassland and brushy cover quail need, working through local chapters and farm conservation programs.
